27 Words: The Second Amendment

The Second Amendment states: A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of the free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

After reading this over 100 times, I could not help but noticed the first part stating " A well regulated militia" and was curious about the deeper meaning. In our history, we did not have military, or a police force that is specially trained in protecting the people. Militia was adopted during the revolutionary war that allowed able bodied men to protect their towns, states were in charge of regulating these men. Today we have police forced that are at the federal, state and local levels, wouldn't this indicate a type of militia?

The next phrase is "being necessary to the security of the free state", in my opinion this means as a country we the citizens are considered free and have the right to feel secure. Many will argue by saying we are free to protect ourselves by bearing arms, but when used with the first part, we the citizens have the right to feel safe through a well regulated militia and they have the right to protect us.

Moving to the last part " the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed". If you only use this part of the amendment, then one will agree citizens have the right to own guns without punishment leaving out the rest of the amendment.

The shooting in Odessa, TX should have opened people eyes, because the shooter was shooting at random as he was driving down the highway. After failing the background check for purchasing a gun, he was still able to buy one from a private seller. Now, TX has lessen the regulations on gun ownership.

I cannot help but ask, is this what well regulated means? Are the people purchasing guns considered a militia? Is it really security if people are living in fear of one another? The NRA is one of the most powerful organizations today and continue to have effects on our democracy. I am sure many of us can agree that all lives matter, yet why is it so hard to find a solution?
